Skill Monkey

Hey, I’m Joe. Welcome to Skill Monkey!

About Joe

I’ve always been someone who enjoys helping people reach their goals. I’ve built a career around serving as a supportive collaborator for my clients. Over the years, I’ve worked with high school and college students, corporate leaders, US federal and military personnel, and many other groups. Serving such diverse groups can be challenging, but I rely on three main skills which help me create a strong foundation with all of my clients. Those skills are Curiosity, Listening, Empathy, and Respect.

Financial Coaching

I’m a certified Personal Finance educator and a member of the Association for Financial Counseling & Planning Education (where I am pursuing my AFC certification).

Career Coaching

My first experience with career advising was as a writing center tutor reviewing and editing resumes. As I’ve moved through my career I’ve worn many hats, including those of the recruiter and hiring manager. Since 2020, I‘ve volunteered with dozens of jobseekers to help them revise their resume reviews, practice for interviews, and discuss other issues in their professional lives. To formalize this experience, I’m also pursuing my IFC certification through CO-Active

About Skill Monkey

Skill Monkey grew out of a desire to help others avoid the pitfalls and stress that I’ve dealt with in the professional and financial aspects of my life. Over the years, I’ve come to recognize how connected these two aspects of my life are and how much they impact my relationships, my mental and physical health, and other areas of my life. In my view, we have to embrace our inner Skill Monkey in order to build the happy, satisfying life we are all aiming for.

To succeed in this we have to do 3 things:

  1. Understand the relationships between all the aspects of our lives
  2. Ask hard questions about who we want to be so that we can build our vision for the future
  3. Create goals and take action to reach them

Seems pretty simple, right?

It’s the same basic framework that people have been working through since ancient times. However, despite centuries of learning and practice, most of us struggle with this. Which makes complete sense considering how much attention, energy, and time are required to get through our everyday lives. Despite a deep held desire to change, it can be almost impossible to do so on your own. What you need is a partner, and that’s where I come in.
